Edmond Alliance Chapter

The Edmond Chapter of the Oklahoma County Medical Alliance (OCMSA-formerly Auxiliary) began in the late 1980's when it was discovered that over 150 physicians lived in Edmond. Most of these doctors were members of the Oklahoma County Medical Society, but they were on staff at so many different hospitals, clinics and private practices, that they often did not know each other. Their spouses, in Edmond, usually became acquainted with other physician spouses only through their churches, civic organizations, or their children's schools, teams, and dance classes. The reason for this, was that hardly any of us attended the Oklahoma County Alliance meetings. It seemed that many of us had small children who needed to be picked up from school at midday. Attending meetings in Oklahoma City was not easy for us. Many of us worked or went to school. Some felt uncomfortable in those meetings where we felt we did not know anyone else.

The Edmond Chapter was started so that the spouses of the many physicians who lived in Edmond could share what we have in common: being in medical families and living in a great suburb. We all live here for similar reasons: good schools, good community, good proximity to the large city. We wantede to share all that in the context of medicine. The chapter was never meant to be a replacement for the OCMSA. It was bringing the alliance to those who hadn't been a part of it. If Mohammed couldn't come to the mountain, the mountain was brought to Mohammad!

Sometimes the meeting topics have been so interesting or fun, that alliance members who DON'T live in Edmond have attended. This is great. We welcome all, as we are likewise invited to be involved in any and all of the events of OCMSA. After all, since the city of Edmond is IN Oklahoma County, Edmond is not likely to form its OWN county medical society or county medical society alliance. That's fine; we have the best of both worlds: small meetings close by and large projects like the Kitchen Tour in Oklahoma City.
